Why do motors use electric slip rings?

Before understanding why all motors use electrical slip rings, we first understand what is electric slip rings. Electric slip rings are also known as Rotary electrical joints, collector rings, or electrical swivels. They are a sort of device, which assists in sending electrical signals power, or data between rotating components and stationary components. They are designed in such a way that it relies upon the type of application it performs. For example, transmitting data requires electrical slip rings with larger bandwidth and better electromagnetic interference.

The main components of any motor are a rotating ring and stationary brushes. Complete electrical slips ring assemble include bearing, caps, and structural features. However, the basic elements of an electrical slip ring are the brushes and the rings. The brushes in an electrical slip ring service connect the end of windings and three insulated electrical slip rings. When an electrical machine is operated, the brushes start to lift automatically. Finally, an electrical signal and a current can easily transfer from the stator to rotor parts.

Importance of electrical slip rings in an AC motor

In an AC induction motor also directed to as wound or rotor motor, electrical slip rings are installed not for communicating electrical power but to exercise resistance into rotor windings. A wound rotor motor used three types of electrical slip rings. They are usually made up of a copper alloy or copper mounted to a motor shaft. Each electrical slip ring is connected to three-phase rotor windings. The brushes of the slip rings are made from graphite that is connected to a resistive device called a rheostat.

When the rotor begins, electrical slip rings are also turned on and the brushes inside a slip ring maintained constant contact with the rings. It supports communicating sufficient resistance to the rotor windings. In this way, the electrical slip rings work as resistance tool rotor windings. Once the router machine reaches its utmost speed, the brush is automatically lifted via a spring. Then the slip rings are automatically short-circuited via a sliding contact bar.

This process added resistance to rotor winding getting the current more in phase with stator current. We all know that in wound rotor motors there are two types of asynchronous Motors. Both the motor works and rotate at different speeds. The result is a higher torque production with a low current. The electrical slip rings are employed as a start-up. However, due to its less efficient and drop-off feature, it runs at a maximum speed. As when the motor reaches its highest speed the electrical slip rings become shorted out and ultimately the brush loses its contact. Therefore, the motor finally acts like a standard AC induction motor.
